I am a Melbourne based interior designer and furniture maker interested in the intersection of classical and contemporary modes of expression. My work is driven by a fascination with traditional techniques, craftsmanship and forms borrowed from the past, and a strong desire to make these qualities resonate with audiences today.

With a background in art history and production design for film, I try to imbue my work with a tactility and sense of nostalgia that is reminiscent of a bygone era, before the advent of mass manufacturing. A particular period of interest is the Wiener Werkstätte, of which my great-grandfather was a disciple, with its celebration of form and craft in a rapidly evolving world. The work that my family produced during this period is a constant source of inspiration and motivation, contributing to my developing design philosophy.

Evidence of this philosophy can be seen in my heritage renovations of Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco houses in Melbourne and country Victoria, where this dialogue between past and present is on display. I have similarly applied this approach to my product design, developing a range of marquetry furniture using traditional techniques to create contemporary scenes and illustrations of life today.

Likewise my table lamps, with silhouettes borrowed from the past, are thrust into the present with raw finishes and a flat-packed design that allows buyers to interact with the work on a more personal level. Whatever the medium, my intentions are plain: to develop a body of work that is accessible to anyone; that celebrates the past on the long and progressive march forward.
